Good oral health is dependent on healthy gums, and you need the same to have a great smile as well. The few minutes you spend each day brushing and flossing on the general well being of your oral health does a lot to help you avoid dental problems in the future.

Things that dont take too seriously, like gums that bleed when you floss, are signs to say that yous gums are not as healthy as they should be. Taking a few precautions can save you from sensitive teeth and even gingivitis, where your gums become inflamed, swollen and bleed.

There is never a wrong time to start caring for your gums.

Brush Regularly

Brushing your teeth twice a day is the minimum care you can give your teeth. This will also help you have healthy gums. Its also more about ‘how’ you brush than the frequency. Keep these points in mind as you brush your teeth.

  • Be gentle. Dont brush too hard.
  • Pick a toothbrush that is soft, as soft bristles wont harm your gums by cutting or rubbing them, thereby leading to bleeding.
  • Make sure to keep your brush at a 45 degree angle as you brush, so that the bristles get up against the gums you wont be rubbing the gums abrasively.
  • Brush for around 2 minutes to help you polish out the harmful bacteria in your mouth.

Floss Floss Floss

Flossing is crucial to keeping your gums healthy. It helps you get rid of the plaque that gets stuck between your teeth and turns to tartar. This plaque and tartar attract bacteria which ultimately lead to the swelling of gums and inflammation.

Flossing takes some getting used to, but after a while it becomes something you cannot live without.

You should try to floss atleast once a day, and try to make it fun. Some floss brands come with different flavors such as mint. If you have tight teeth, where there is no much space between the teeth, a floss tape or ribbon is a better alternative. Waxed floss also goes between your teeth more easily.

Chronic bad breath is an after effect of not flossing. Although you do brush, not having a habit of flossing regularly means that there will be food particles stuck between your teeth, creating a bad smell and leading to bad breath.

Did you know that flossing is also great for your heart? Studies have shown that people who floss show lower incidents of heart failure than people who dont.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash will keep all the harmful bacteria away and also give you fresh breath.

There are quite a few brands of mouthwash in the market that is designed to kill bacteria. It is always recommended to go for one of these.

Eat Cheese

Did you know eating a piece of aged cheese such as swiss cheese is a great alternative to brushing after a meal? It helps in pulling out the plaque and food particles leftover from meals. In addition, the calcium you get from cheese is very good for your bones and teeth.

Chew Sugarless Gum

Sugarless gum helps you clean your mouth and freshen your breath after a meal, in one go. Chew on this sugarless gum for around 20 minutes after eating. Keep the gum chewing to a limit though, as chewing gum for too long is known to create jaw problems.

At all costs, avoid gum with sugar, as the sugar in these will only add to the plaque and bacteria in your mouth.

Oil Pulling

This is a very popular folk technique to clean your mouth. Wash your mouth – or slosh a tablespoon of coconut, sunflower or seseme oil in your mouth for around 10/20 minutes and spit it out. It acts as a flossing technique as the oil that goes through your teeth will create a flossing effect, and also whitens your teeth. If you have any loose fillings or sensitive teeth, have a chat with your dentist before you try this out.

Don’t Forget the Dentist

It is crucial to see your dentist every 6 months. This will help you in the early detection of problems and will help you keep your teeth in check. The dentist will also be able to give you regular clean ups and take out the plaque and tartar build up that will lead to diseased gums.

It’s Easy!

All these can be done within a few minutes of a day, for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Quite a good investment don’t you think? So try these pointers and take care of your beautiful smile!
